Can women shave their faces? Will upper lip hair grow back thicker if you shave it?

Facial hair removal, from threading to waxing, has been around for centuries. Whether you get rid of your facial hair is up to personal preference, but some methods are more effective than others. Shaving is many womens’ hair removal method of choice when it comes to their body hair, but is it a decent way to get rid of the hair on their upper lip, chin and elsewhere on their faces? Or will shaving cause facial hair to grow back thicker and more quickly? chatted to the founder of Sunny Choudhery to find out.

Hair removal expert Sunny Choudhery believes that hair removal is the preference of most women in the world, rather than something that is connected to gender inequality and patriarchy.

She said: “Facial hair removal for women has been around for a long time and threading is an ancient South Asian and Arab hair removal technique that is still used today.

“In ancient Egypt, threading was used by powerful women who were far from being oppressed and exploited by men.

“While it’s always worth considering the effects of the patriarchy, culture and society in this regard, it really isn’t as deep as that for most women.

“It’s as simple as wanting clear, smooth skin and appearing more feminine, and this involves being hairless first.

“The huge demand for facial hair removal products, especially in the at-home self-care realm demonstrates the preference for being hair-free, especially on the face.”

The only downside is the fact that your hair isn’t removed from the root so it will seem to grow back more quickly.

Shaving or dermaplaning will need to be done every couple of days to keep your skin hair-free, but this can be too harsh on your skin.

Instead of relying on a razor, Sunny recommends investing in a facial hair epilator for longer-lasting results.

She said: “Epilation removes hair from the root, and you can buy a product like the Tweezy epilator to do this yourself at home.

“Epilation uses the same principle as threading but it is more convenient because you don’t have to pay someone to do it or sit in the middle of a shopping centre to get it done!

“As someone of South Asian descent with naturally thick and dark hair, I too was always told to never shave my facial hair as it will grow back thicker.

“Through research I found that that’s not actually the case, that solutions for facial hair removal are meagre and there are still major misconceptions around facial hair and its removal.”
